Amorous relationships in the workplace aren’t something to just snigger about over by the coffee machine. They are also the study of academic research. Why, you may ask? The answer, of course, is because we are human and humans have inbuilt biases and prejudices that, however hard we may try to suppress them, bubble up at strategic moments. Moments such as deciding who to promote and who to select for training and development.
If we can be alert to these prejudices — the theory goes — the more likely it is that we can prevent them from interfering with hard, business decisions. Hierarchical workplace romance, or HWR, as it’s known in the academic community, is when there is an imbalance in a romantic relationship at work such as a supervisor-subordinate match. While there has been research on third-party perceptions and reactions to romantic workplace relationships, it hasn’t dug deeper to look at how third parties can have an impact on the career development and progression of these star-crossed lovers.
Suzanne Chan-Serafin, a senior lecturer in the school of management at UNSW Business School, wanted to find out whether knowledge of an employee’s workplace romance was used unfairly in the evaluation of their performance at work. In her study, which for simplicity concentrated only on heterosexual relationships, Chan-Serafin found that if an employee was in a relationship with their boss or supervisor, their chances of being promoted or considered for internal training programs was reduced.
But there was one unexpected outcome. The only difference was gender candidates had obviously male or female names.

There are a few golden rules of being an all-star employee: Always be polite to your manager, stay on top of your assignments and make yourself an indispensable member of the team. But having a good relationship with your supervisor has the ability to positively impact the trajectory of your career. A study published in Ergonomics found that a negative work environment leads to high employee turnover rates and researchers at NYU found that employee productivity is directly linked to his or her relationships with superiors.
Clearly, the relationship you have with your employer plays a large role in career success. And beyond being good for your career, a little office bonding is also important for your physical and mental health. A quarter of people spend most of their time thinking about work — more than they think about sex or money. On top of that, we spend about a third of our time in the office.

In fact, some organizations have policies that prohibit these types of relationships. According to Vault. Employers have a reason to worry. In , more than 13, sexual harassment claims were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Even if policies don’t prohibit these relationships, this is a consideration that whoever is in the power position needs to consider seriously. Any kind of favoritism toward one employee over others is obviously a concern in the workplace. More than 70 percent did not have formal written or verbal policies dealing with romantic relationships. However, the numbers changed sharply when the dating relationship changed from being between co-workers to being between manager and subordinate percent believed that relationships between superiors and subordinates should be prohibited.
Even in environments where relationships are permitted in the workplace between managers and subordinates, those involved in these relationships need to maintain a professional distance while on the job. Not all relationships last forever, of course, but if and when the relationship between manager and subordinate ends, the work relationship may need to continue. That can be uncomfortable for both parties as well as for co-workers.

Companies have increased scrutiny of consensual relationships among colleagues in the wake of the MeToo movement. Mark Wiseman, a potential successor to BlackRock Inc. Chief Executive Laurence Fink, became the latest high-level boss to run afoul of company rules on romantic relationships at work. The asset manager requires employees to disclose any relationship—whether they are with direct subordinates or with other colleagues to the company.
Wiseman, who said he had engaged in a consensual relationship with a colleague without reporting it, was terminated as a result. Other companies, such as Facebook Inc. Meanwhile, some prohibit any romantic relationships in the workplace. If there is one takeaway for bosses at any level, it is that companies would prefer they avoid dating someone at work whatsoever, according to workplace and corporate-governance experts.
That is changing. Avoiding mixing love and work is the safer choice today, Ms. Temin said. The closer scrutiny has made CEOs more vulnerable.
The Boss Is Dating an Employee. Now What?
Thirty-six percent of workers reported dating a co-worker, which is down from 41 percent last year. The thorn in the rose, however, is that the number of workers who reported dating their boss is up this year — 22 percent of workers compared to 15 percent last year. In the midst of the nationwide MeToo movement, employers have every reason to worry about these numbers — especially the large number of employees dating employees in a higher position. Relationships between employees and supervisors are particularly problematic.
Strict liability means that the employer has absolute legal responsibility for any harm — the employer does not have to be found careless or negligent.
Fifteen percent say the person they dated was their boss. Even though office relationships may be more common, this doesn’t mean that issues.
When you are romantically attracted to your female boss, the prospect of asking her on a date is fraught with potential problems–for you and for her. If the attraction is casual or purely physical, you would probably be wise not to ask her out. However, if your romantic passion is so powerful that you simply have to take a shot, you can ask her in a way that is most likely to protect you both from embarrassing or career-threatening conflicts.
Review your employer’s policies. No laws prevent employees who share a work environment from dating, but psychologist Gary Vikesland notes on the Employer-Employee. Discuss your intentions with a discreet person in your workplace. If you feel comfortable talking about it with a superior whose rank is equal to or higher than your boss, doing so may be helpful for several reasons.
The superior may give you insight into the particular problems that dating a subordinate could pose for your boss. The fact that you made your intentions known to a superior beforehand could work in your favor if anyone makes false accusations about your behavior or claims you violated company policy. The superior may also have ideas about how your boss could delegate her authority over you to another party if she is interested in dating you but does not want to create a conflict of interest with her work duties.
Finally, the superior might be able to talk you out of it, which could be for the best. Choose an appropriate location to ask for the date.
Is Having Sex With Your Boss Sexual Harassment?
Supervisor asks the subordinate out, she says sure, they date, fall in love, and live happily ever after. Any harassment? No, says Segal.
It is common for relationships and attractions to develop in the workplace. As an employer, it is important to ensure that these circumstances do not lead to incidents of sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is any unwanted or unwelcome sexual behaviour where a reasonable person would have anticipated the possibility that the person harassed would feel offended, humiliated or intimidated.
It has nothing to do with mutual attraction or consensual behaviour. The fact that two individuals have been in a consensual sexual relationship does not mean that sexual harassment may not occur following the end of the relationship. Example: A young employee and her boss engaged in consensual sexual intercourse on four occasions. A court found some of this was welcome. However, the court also found that certain acts — including giving the woman gifts of a sexual nature, such as underwear, sending explicit text messages and attempting to share a bunk bed — was unwelcome sexual harassment.
Example: An employee in a small food company said the owner repeatedly asked her out, as well as frequently kissing her on the cheek and commenting on her looks. This could be sexual harassment. Sexual harassment in the workplace is against the law. A person who sexually harasses someone else is responsible for their behaviour.
