The Parker 51 chosen for this review is a U. It is finished in Burgundy, which is much more ‘Brown’ than Red. The colour of the American burgundy 51s is very similar to the ‘Cordovan Brown’ used in the earlier Vacumatic versions, the ‘English Burgundy’ is much ‘Redder’ and is sometimes referred to as ‘Bloody Burgundy’. It has a pearl coloured end stud and a gold filled arrow clip. It is engraved with groups of five longitudinal lines with a claear space between the groups, tapering towards the top of the cap. The filler sleeve is polished Chrome and bears the inscription:. The original ‘Pli-Glass’ ink sac is unstained on this particular pen, suggesting very little use.

RED BAND “51” Produced merely two years and released in small numbers, the “red band” Parker “51” pens from are items of high cachet. Discontinued due to challenges repairing them, today they are quite scarce. Near the high end of the cachet pyramid reside those “51” featuring solid gold caps. Given as gifts by those who had significant discretionary funds, these truly evinced Parker’s, “Jewels of Pendom” philosophy.

Parker “51” was released for sale in the USA in While it is uncertain that all features persisted the entire year, or that all the first year features disappeared by the start of the 2nd year, pens that carry “First Year” features do have above average collector cachet. The blind cap is fitted with a gold-filled or gold tassie trim ring , instead of being smooth, as for Single Jewel pens. Even excluding those pens with solid gold caps and those with “first year” features, the remaining Double Jewel pens are considered up-scale items from a collector standpoint, and do offer a wide variety of both colors and cap styles.

Long before the incredibly diverse selection of fountain pen inks and manufacturers we currently know existed, there was a much smaller variety available. The number of manufacturers could be counted on two hands and colors were more or less limited to very subtle variations of blue, black, red, green, purple and brown. Still, there is a certain charm and satisfaction to using vintage fountain pen inks, especially if you also use vintage fountain pens.

Collecting vintage fountain pen ink can be enjoyable and rewarding. Years back, I actually wrote and self-published a book about vintage inks. In fact, most of the text in this article comes from that book.

The Date Codes were used from onward with the code letters spelling out the words QUALITY PEN every 10 years. Each year is divided into quarter.

Return to Parker. For those of us concerned with when a pen was made, Parker is the sweetest of all makers, in that many of their pen actually have a date printed right on them. Not only the year, but which quarter of the year, will appear, giving a very clear sense of just how old the pen is. While modern Parkers that follow this practice mark only the barrel or cap of the pen, vintage pens generally have a code on the barrel and on the point. One generally takes the barrel as definitive of the age of the pen as a unit, since caps, barrels and blind caps were usually all made together, and swapping tends to show.

This does not mean that a point whose date code does not agree with the barrel is necessarily a replacement. An other thing to not get too concerned about is finding a pen has lost its code. Modern pens are much more likely to present their codes, but their codes are less easily understood. Parker began applying date codes in

Parker had had a subsidiary in the UK since at least , as shown by old ads. First there was only marketing and a selling force. The setup worked fine, until World War II, when shipping became increasingly more risky. Some sources indicate that Parker already from time to time had had a co-operation with the Valentine Pen Company, in Newhaven, starting in the late ‘s. But the company had failed to become really successful in their own right.

Part of the answer was probably that they never concentrated on one specific model, instead they would accept orders of maybe a dozen or two pens, a strategy that proved uneconomical. According to David Shepherd in his book Parker Duofold, Valentine in even had to publicly apologise to the UK pen maker Conway Stewart for a patent infringement, albeit an unintended one.

Note the cap on the bottom pen. It was of course convenient, as well as profitable, for Valentine to produce pens that was very similar to the Parker Duofolds. The same workers were now making both Valentine and Parker pens. Still in the beginning most parts were manufactured in Toronto, but gradually Newhaven took over the European market. The very first Parker model that was solely made in Newhaven was the Parker Victory.

To complicate things further there’s also a MK I-B , a transitional Vacumatic filler with the new style non-blue diamond cap with a long clip.
